The retail space for Anchor Bend Glassworks’ hand blown creations actually anchors an otherwise changing collection of storefronts on Franklin Street. The store carries the prolific output from the North Kingstown glass studio where Mike Richardson, Timothy Underwood and Rhode Island School of Design grad Justin Tarducci produce art ranging from 75-cent glass beads to $3,000 custom wall sculptures, all of it sales tax-free. Anchor Bend has a certificate of exemption from the state Division of Taxation because it’s located in Newport’s tax-free arts district. Fun and functional artistry on display includes Tarducci’s 2007 NICHE Award-winning 8 Ball martini glasses. The gallery also recently introduced a new “Canefetti” line, featuring glassware with swirled colors from the long thin rods of cane glass. The company’s commissions have included creating votives for Castle Hill Inn and The Mooring restaurants as well as Boat of the Year trophies for Cruising World and Sailing World magazines and the trophy for the Original SingleHanded Trans-Atlantic Race awarded to Dutchman Jan Kees Lampe last weekend at the Newport Yacht Club.
